Meet Your Tutor
Founder of Piano Portals, Stephen Marquiss MA (Cantab.), journeyed from technical frustration to facility in his 30s and 40s.
After emerging from music school in the late '90s plagued by recurring injury and a ceiling on his technique, Stephen spent 25 years refining a radical, holistic approach to the piano. This investigation led to a groundbreaking framework that empowers Elementary to Advanced pianists to bypass blocks and play to their true potential.
Inspired by the work of Abby Whiteside (1881-1956), Stephen created Piano Portals as a foundational reset for technique—a groundbreaking, joyful alternative to conventional drills and dogma.
Stephen is a renowned pianist, tutor and speaker. He has been a specialist tutor for the prestigious Jackdaws Music Education Trust since 2017 and a three-time invited speaker at the UK Music and Drama Education Expo. His work has been featured in International Piano and Music Teacher magazines and on BBC Radio 3.
